Our History

The Shroom opened up in 1968 by Doren and Bill Moonpie. They were a young married couple that got inspired to sell foods made with mushrooms after attending Woodstock. The Moonpie's moved to Macon, Georgia because that's where Bill grew up. The couple started as a small little stand that sat in the couple's driveway. Word of mouth sent people all over to try The Shroom's odd menu choices. This caused the young couple to buy a small plot of land with a parking lot that allowed them to build there dream restaurant. The Shroom officially had a stable home, and had its grand opening November17, 1970. The Moonpie's had their only son a year after the grand opening. After Bill and Doren Moonpie died in a car accident in 2005 their son Danny Moonpie took over the family business. Danny has made it a priority to run the restaurant like his parents would, which is why he has never franchised. The Shroom is constantly coming up with new recipes and adding them to the menu.
